How We Fuel Our Emotions Into Overwhelming Us

And how to stop it without denying or swapping painful thoughts for happier ones.

Emotions go from manageable to overwhelming when we don’t take care of them. Getting overwhelmed leads to losing composure. This is bad because once composure is lost, it’s hard to regain it.

You know you’ve entered the realm of overwhelm when your emotions reveal their dark side.

  • Sadness becomes depression
  • Anger becomes rage
  • Worry becomes anxiety
  • Craving becomes lust

The list goes on and on. But every feeling is manageable until the point it overwhelms. When it does, it’s become something heavier and darker. But feelings don’t grow into monsters on their own.

In order for an emotion to transform into its most vicious form, it needs to be fed. This is where myself and so many of us inadvertently create the monster within us. Our feelings gain strength and size by feeding on the energy of our aimless thoughts.

Fueling the emotion

When I’m ruminating over something I’m angry about, the anger grows unbearable. The same goes for sadness and any other emotion.
