I think this what makes kindness difficult. We are conditioned to expect something in return, as you mentioned. Maybe there should be more children shows/cartoons where the main character is kind and gets nothing in return, but the show highlights how the protagonist feels fulfilled in their kindness. I can't recall any stories like that from my childhood.
