I used to skim when I joined Medium and it didn't get me very far.

Once I slowed down and gave my attention to people's work, I realized I enjoyed it and that I usually had something to say other than "great work, nice writing, thanks for this" and the other comments that show the reader probably didn't read it. That's fine and all, but going deeper as you mention here I think helps create a sense of community and support, which is one of the big reasons I've stuck around. The people here are great.
