It's so interesting how one person's expression of love can offend another or be entirely overlooked. I really think you brought it all home in that last statement though about listening to others.
When we listen to others without judgment or conditions, we learn how they express and receive love, and (if not unreasonable) we can deliver it in a way that they'll receive it best. But as you mentioned, the people pleasing aspect of this can really have us betray our own hearts.
I suppose there's a balance to it all.
