When the Thought of Future Tasks Become So Heavy That It Stops You From Proceeding

Then it’s time to bring the focus back to reality.

I’ve quit so many projects I was passionate about when I imagined the massive amount of work that lay ahead of me. I think this is something everyone has experienced at some point.

We kick things off, eager to get the ball rolling. Then we gaze down the path ahead to see where that finish line is, but all that’s visible is a winding road of obstacles.

Projecting like this has us drop the things we want because they become too intimidating to continue. Making a habit of this leaves us with a growing stack of unfinished projects, broken promises, and regret.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Turning this around starts by recognizing that the weight of future tasks is imaginary.

It’s just a story

When we create a story about what’s coming, we can psych ourselves out of continuing whatever we are doing.

I struggle with this often because when I see an impossible pile of work up ahead, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and give up. But it’s the idea of the work that causes this, not the work itself.
